Baked French Toast

I have never quite understood why French toast was called "French toast." I mean French toast is just some white bread dipped in an egg wash and cooked on a skillet. What's so French about that? How dare the French just put their country's name in front of food items! (French toast, French fries, French green beans, etc.) But now I can truly say that this recipe is "French" toast. Why? Well you use french bread! Finally this is all making sense to me. Better yet, this version of French toast is AMAZING! I mean you soak the bread in yummy deliciousness. Whats not to love about yummy deliciousness? Here allow me to answer that for you: NOTHING.
Baked French Toast
You will need:
8 eggs
1 C milk
2 tsp. vanilla
2 Tbsp. powdered sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
8 1-inch slices French bread
1 Tbsp. butter

1. Whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla, powdered sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl.
2. Lightly butter or spray a 9 by 13-inch pan. Arrange the bread slices in the pan. (The bread should fill the pan, only leaving spaces around the curves. If you use a baguette-size loaf, you will need more than eight slices.)
3. Pour the eggs mixture over the bread and turn each slice over to thoroughly coat. Cover the pan with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour, or up to 1 day.
4. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
5. Place a small piece of the butter on top of each piece of bread. Bake the French toast for 25 to 30 minutes, or until light brown. (The toast will puff up during cooking and fall as soon as it is removed from the oven.)
6. Serve with maple syrup, jam, or fresh fruit or berries.
